New York City Organizations helping Street Cats

City-wide:

Feral Cat Council
(April 5, 2005) The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, recognizing the importance of getting the feral and stray cat overpopulation problem in our city under control, has launched the Feral Cat Initiative. Administered by Neighborhood Cats, the new program is designed to assist caretakers and other concerned individuals who want to help the cats in their area by using "Trap-Neuter-Return." (TNR). TNR is the only technique proven effective at reducing the cats' numbers over the long-term and is endorsed by the member organizations of the New York City Feral Cat Council, including the Mayor's Alliance, the ASPCA and the Humane Society of NY.

The Feral Cat Initiative
The Feral Cat Initiative is a program sponsored by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and administered by Neighborhood Cats. A primary goal of the Initiative is to help caretakers effectively perform Trap-Neuter-Return projects. Towards this goal, assistance is available to qualified individuals in arranging, at no cost, spay/neuter, equipment and experienced volunteer help.

At the caretaker's expense, assistance is also provided in arranging for transportation, ancillary veterinary care and, in very limited circumstances, building recovery space. Please note that the cost of these services as well as other project-related expenses (e.g., bait, sheets, etc.) are the caretaker's responsibility. Financial aid may be provided at the Initiative's discretion, if financial need can be demonstrated in the form of a current letter of disability, Social Security assistance, unemployment, welfare assistance or the like.
